LSS 3003 - Final Project - Sailing

Sailing

This paper aims to discuss about sailing, which is a sports that is usually being gained on the body of water. This is referred as the vehicle that is utilizing propulsion under the use of movement control on its fabric sails. Sailors are going to manage to change the rudder and the rigging of the sailing vehicle or even using the centerboard and the keel that will aim to be gliding with the force of the wind. If the sailors are going to adjust the position of the sail helps to determine the speed of the sail in order to reach the point of destination. It associates with the mastery of allowing it to utilize the wind direction as well as the sea conditions in order to move the sailing vehicle or the sailboat. This is to show more about the understanding of the environment.
Sailing is some of the most expensive sports in the world for the reason that the sailing boat that is used in the race is custom designed that is only applied for sailing events. It is because the design as well as the sport requires sophistication, which is only appreciated by individuals who are interested in sailing boats, which are mostly yacht owners. However, athletes who are trained to compete in sailing competitions are only those who have businesses in sailing. It was usually being used as a recreational activity but most rich users suggested that sailing can be an important part of a sporting event that will allow the elite members of the society to be involved in a highly competitive event such as sailing boats. It can help benefit the participants as well as the organizers of the sporting event in an economic and entertainment related activities whenever an event is organized in waters.

In history, sailing has been an instrumental value for the civilization development even before the age of exploration. Ancient explorers realized that sailing is one of the significant forms of transportation that aims to keep a certain vessel to travel from far distances. It has been observed that sailing is being made when the sail that is made up of cloth is going to interact with the air that will help create force that increases acceleration. If the law of the aerodynamics, if the net force is pushed by the force of the wind from the back of the vessel, it will allow the vessel to move forward. This is why sails were usually being positioned parallel to the length of the ship or the boat so that the wind can push the ship forward. Today, sail boats are positioned into a diagonal direction in order to provide a smoother flow of the wind according to Rodger (2009).
In sailing, there are points of the sail that must be understood. It is about the elaboration of the boat’s movement in the course of the wind in 5 main points. Close haul pertains to a scenario that when the minimum angle of the wind that the rig and the boat can be able to manage, it is 45 degrees to the wind. Close reach is a position of the sail that is between a beam reach and close hauled. Beam reach is approximately about 90 degrees to the wind in a perpendicular direction. Broad reach is a position of the sail that is positioned between the running and a beam reach of the sail. Running is a position that is having a close proximity directly towards the downwind. These are just the five points of sail that goes directly downwind during a sailing expedition or a sailing event according to Wilson (2013).

There are basic techniques in sailing in order to become competitive in sports. Making the course good allows sailors to turn or steer the boat vessel according to the buoy or course to apparent direction of the wind. Trim allows the aft balance and the fore of the boat in order to adjust the ballast that is movable to backward or forward motion. Balance is about preventing excessive heeling that will help to prevent any risk of outbalancing the position of the boat. Sail trim is about aligning the sail edge that will be positioned exactly with the line of the wind direction. The centerboard is also known as the daggerboard that is always lowered in order to make its direction to be close to the wind. These are at least the five of the most important essentials that are being applied to improve the sailing’s central aspects during sailing competition according to Carter (2012).
Pertaining with the hull shapes and the sailing hulls, there are monohulls that represents one hulls being used in sailing. Catamarans that are composed of three sails, and also Timarans are composed of three sails. When the boat is smaller, it can have a raisable underwater fin that is utilized in order to keep the position of the boat to be well-balanced. This can be moved on the front or the back when the boat is smaller. If the sailboat is bigger, the sail can be raised its sides in order to allow one side to be touching the water so that the friction with the water will fasten the movement of the boat. These are some of the tips that are being suggested so that the speed of the boat will be navigable according to their shapes and sizes that are required by the operating sporting agency.

Pertaining with the rules and regulations of sailing sports, all sailors are required to ensure about the maintenance of having a proper lookout of their sails at all times. Adjusting with the speed is essential that will provide compatibility with the conditions of the movement of the sail. It is important for the sailors to become more aware whether to give way or to stand in when enduring a close quarter scenario during sailing a boat. The licensing of a sailing vessel is always regulated according to either local or international standards. However, when sailing a boat on a non-competitive basis, there are no licensing requirements due to the lesser threat that can be applied by the regulating agency in order to allow the sailboat to be utilized. There are standards that are always measured such as the signals, buoyage, rules, lateral marks, and lights that are being managed in order to ensure the quality of the sailing navigation according to Wilmot (2010).
As an implication, sailing is one of the rarest sports that are usually being organized in order to fulfill a certain sporting event. However, it is also one of the most luxurious. People who are involved in sailing have the chance to become more empowered with the use of a device that will help to improve responsible sailing activities. Learning more about sailing can be a complex activity because there are numerous laws and safety measures that should be applied before mastering the arts and strategies of this particular sport. The challenging scenario about this particular sport is about the availability of equipments because there are only few available facilities in a particular area where sailing is being practiced. This includes all coastal countries across the world where there is a significant body of water that can be used for sailing activities for enthusiasts as well as for the athletes competing for any sailing event according to Cort (2010).
